Container #42 (Joyful Succulents #13): Flowering Cactus

May 22, 2020 By Cindy Jungman, SDSU Extension Master Gardener

Cactus plants have a majesty all their own, but when they bloom…WOW! This cactus plant is around ten years old, and it has bloomed almost from the beginning. Each year I get more blossoms, and they are produced over a longer period of time. Unfortunately, these cactus blossoms only last a day or so. You want to make sure you don’t miss the show!

RECIPE:
• (1) Cactus echinopsis subdemudata

TIPS:
• This cactus plant is moved inside during the winter. It gets west sun and fluorescent light.
• Cactus plants like tight quarters. I transplant only when the cactus plant totally fills its container (every 3-4 years) and then I move it to a slightly larger container.
• This cactus plant readily produces baby offsets at its base which can be removed and planted to start a new generation.
