About the Arc of Dreams Garden

In the fall of 2019, the City of Sioux Falls considered planting sod grass at the west end of the Arc of Dreams.  Instead, the City approached the Minnehaha County Master Gardeners (MCMG) to see if they would consider planting a garden. Deb Johnson, the MCMG President at the time, jumped at the chance to design and plant a native pollinator garden and it was aptly named the Garden of Dreams. The MCMG also agreed to continually maintain this beautiful garden.

Before planting could begin in the spring of 2020, the weeds had to be controlled.  To accomplish this, cardboard and mulch was applied in December 2019 to smother weeds over the winter. Beginning in May 2020, marigolds and zinnias were planted directly through the cardboard. As with any garden, there was some plant loss.  But in 2021, planting continued with more native perennials followed by a notable increase in bees, butterflies, beetles, and birds.

This year, 2022, the garden has become a success.  As the plants are blooming, there is an abundance of pollinators and of course, the occasional bunny presence.  Small baskets are placed are over those plants that need protection while they grow. Plants are labeled so be sure to look for:  sea holly, spotted bee balm, butterfly weed, goldenrod, mountain mint, ground cherries, sedums, white sage, Russian sage, and many perennial grasses. This garden will continue to grow and change in the coming years, so be sure to keep checking back over the seasons.  The garden is beautiful in the summer and has great winter interest too.
