Container #22: Plumbago

May 22, 2020 By Cindy Jungman, SDSU Extension Master Gardener

You just can’t beat the sky-blue color of the flower clusters on this plant! Plumbago is actually a non-hardy shrub. It holds up to the strongest of winds, and produces flowers all summer. The Plumbago shrub is underplanted with petunia and lobelia plants.

RECIPE:
• (1) Plumbago “Imperial Blue”
• (3) Petunia “Shock Wave Coconut”
• (3) Lobelia “Techno Heat Blue”

TIPS:
• Although I used an obelisk in this container, it was just for looks. Plumbago plants need no support.
• Use well-draining soil, and then provide plenty of water.
• All plants in this container can be trimmed occasionally to maintain a fresh full look.
• Plumbago plants can be moved inside and grown as house plants in winter.

Container #23: Hanging Succulent Basket (Joyful Succulents #4)

May 22, 2020 By Cindy Jungman, SDSU Extension Master Gardener

This hanging basket stands out against the wooden fence because of the many colors, shapes, and sizes of the succulent plants.

RECIPE:
• (1) Large Echeveria “Black Prince”
• (2) Variegated Portulaca afra “Elephant Bush”
• (2) Sedum nussbaunerianum “Coppertone”
• (2) Echeveria “Jade Green”
• (2) Sedum Morganianum
• (1) Graptosedum “Alpenglow”
• Various clumps Sedum “Fine Leaf Gold”

TIPS:
• I lined the woven twig basket with plastic to better hold the soil. Poke holes in the bottom of the plastic liner to allow water to run through.

Container #24: Shades of Green

May 22, 2020 By Cindy Jungman, SDSU Extension Master Gardener

There are so many subtle shades of green in this container! It provides a soft cool picture.

RECIPE:
• (1) Petunia “Pistachio Cream Ray”
• (1) Geranium “Mrs. Pollack”
• (1) Cordyline Ti Plant “Cherry Cordial”
• (2) Clumps Sedum “Lemon Coral”

TIPS:
• I used the cordyline plant to compliment the burgundy colors in the geranium leaves.
• Likewise, the lime green sedum helps bring out the lime color in the petunia blossoms.
• The lime green ceramic container is perfect for this plant combination.

Container #26 (Joyful Succulents #5): Coppertone Plant

May 22, 2020 By Cindy Jungman, SDSU Extension Master Gardener

The orange color of this succulent really stands out, and it is enhanced by the matching container and rocks. This plant will be a lime green color under low light conditions. Give it full sun and it turns orange.

RECIPE:
• (1) Sedum nussbaumerianum “Coppertone”

TIPS:
• Pinching off the top of this plant when it is young will encourage branching.
• I like to top dress my succulent containers with pea gravel to give it a finished look.
• I also use unique rocks to add to give the containers a more natural look.
• This plant is easy to propagate by leaf or stem cuttings. Watch for upcoming posts on propagation!
