Container #27: Icicles and Silver Falls

May 22, 2020 By Cindy Jungman, SDSU Extension Master Gardener

The silvery colors in this container are separated by purple. The Purple Heart plants offer some purple highlights in the background.

RECIPE:
• (1) Licorice Plant “Icicles”
• (2) Littletunia “Blue Vein”
• (2) Dichondra “Silver Falls”
• (2) Trancescantia “Purple Heart”

TIPS:
• Trim the ends of the dichondra when they reach the ground to prevent them from rooting to the ground.
• While they look like calibrachoa, littletunias are actually miniature petunias. They stay dense and have a mounded habit, so they make great filler plants. Littletunias need little if no pruning.
• This container has a large root system so water often.

Container #28 (Joyful Succulents #6): All About the Blues

May 22, 2020 By Cindy Jungman, SDSU Extension Master Gardener

This combination is all about the blues, the container and plants all blending with their blue/gray coloring!

RECIPE:
• (1) Senecio “Blue Chalk Fingers”
• (4) Blue Echeveria
• (4) Variegated Sedum

TIPS:
• “Blue Chalk Fingers” will let you know if it needs water as its fingers will droop! This plant has a larger root system than many succulents.
• Trim the sedum as it matures if it tries to overtake the echeveria.

Container #29: Pineapple Splash

May 22, 2020 By Cindy Jungman, SDSU Extension Master Gardener

This coleus tolerates sun well, and its colors are enhanced in the sun. I grow this plant where it receives sun until about 2:00 in the afternoon.

RECIPE:
• (3) Coleus “Pineapple Splash”
• (3) Lysimachia “Aurora”

TIPS:
• I recommend some protection from the wind as this container grows taller.
• Trim the lysimachia before it reaches the ground to prevent rooting.
• This lysimachia is a hardy perennial. It forms a nice groundcover but spreads readily!

Container #30 (Joyful Succulents #7): String of Buttons

May 22, 2020 By Cindy Jungman, SDSU Extension Master Gardener

“String of Buttons” plants make the most attractive container! It’s beautifully colored button leaves look like they are strung together. A bonus is that this plant puts our pretty burgundy flower bracts late in the summer.

RECIPE:
• (1) Crassula Perforata “String of Buttons”

TIPS:
• This plant requires no pruning.
• Water thoroughly (until water runs out the bottom of the container) and then let it dry completely before watering again.
• This plant can be grown in full sun or part shade, but its color is enhanced in full sun.
• This plant can be grown inside in the winter as a house plant if given plenty of light.
• This plant is also easy to propagate. I will cover propagation later in the season.

Container #31: Beach Dish Garden

May 22, 2020 By Cindy Jungman, SDSU Extension Master Gardener

This cute little dish garden was designed by my neighbor. Doesn’t it make you want to lounge at the beach with a nice cold beverage? Thank you to Teresa for allowing me to share!

RECIPE:
• (1) Calibrachoa “Superbells Hollywood Star”
• (1) Dichondra “Silver Falls”
• (1) Creeping Wire Vine “Nana”

TIPS:
• Choose plants that have the same light requirements.
• Trim plants as needed to fit the size of the scene.
• Due to the shallow nature of a dish garden, they may need frequent watering.
