Container #37: Soft & Subtle

May 22, 2020 By Cindy Jungman, SDSU Extension Master Gardener

This container provides soft subtle color. The upright habit of the fuschia allows the blossoms to dangle over the other plants.

RECIPE:
• (1) Fuschia “Delta’s Sarah”
• (1) Ivy “Lauren’s Lace”
• (1) Impatiens “Impreza Orange”

TIPS:
• The fuschia flowers best in part shade rather than full shade.
• The ivy makes a wonderful house plant, but be sure to treat the plant with systemic or insecticidal soap prior to taking it inside to prevent an infestation of spider mites.

Container #38 (Joyful Succulents #11): Colorful Kiwi

May 22, 2020 By Cindy Jungman, SDSU Extension Master Gardener

Aeonium “Kiwi” is such a colorful plant when given full sun! It’s green, yellow and pink colors are a show in themselves, but the plant is even more showy when underplanted with the yellowish fine-leaf sedum.

RECIPE:
• (3) Aeonium “Kiwi”
• (1) Sedum “Fine Leaf Gold”, divided

TIPS:
• The Aeonium plant puts out plentiful rosettes, so the container will become fuller as the summer progresses.
• Aeonium is easy to propagate from stem cuttings. More on this later in the summer!

Container #39: Welcoming Geraniums

May 22, 2020 By Cindy Jungman, SDSU Extension Master Gardener

My neighbor’s geranium containers provide a colorful welcome to her front door. Thank you, Heidi, for allowing me to share!

RECIPE:
(5) Zonal geraniums, species unknown, various colors

TIPS:
• Using steps is a simple way to showcase a collection of containers.
• Geraniums need frequent deadheading (removal of spent blossoms) in order to maintain continuous blooms.
• Geraniums are heavy feeders. Fertilize every two weeks according to fertilizer directions.
• Geraniums prefer moist but well-drained soil. Water as soon as the soil appears to be on the dry side.

Container #40 (Joyful Succulents #12): Devil’s Backbone

May 22, 2020 By Cindy Jungman, SDSU Extension Master Gardener

The zig-zag shape of the stems on the middle plant gives it the name “Devil’s Backbone!” The leaves of the Devil’s Backbone plant will take on a pink hue as the summer goes on. The “Calico Kittens” plant surrounding the center plant is a beautiful trailing succulent with beautiful pink and green shades to its leaves.

RECIPE:
• (1) Euphorbia tithymaloides “Devil’s Backbone”
• (1) Crassula pellucida variegate “Calico Kittens”

TIPS:
• Both these plants do well as house plants in winter.

Container #41: Soft Hues

May 22, 2020 By Cindy Jungman, SDSU Extension Master Gardener

I love the soft hues in this container! I especially wanted to point out the eucalyptus used as a thriller/spiller plant in this container. Eucalyptus plants grow quite large by the end of the season; therefore what began as a spiller plant becomes a standout thriller plant later on.

RECIPE:
(1) Salvia “Velocity Blue”
(1) Petunia “Easy Wave Yellow”
(1) Petunia “Clear Days”
(2) Dusty Miller “Silverdust”
(1) Eucalyptus “Silver Dollar”

TIPS:
• Remove spent salvia blooms to promote continuous blossoms.
• Trim petunias occasionally to rejuvenate the plants and encourage more blossoms.
