Container #52: Bubblegum & Little Ruby

May 22, 2020 By Cindy Jungman, SDSU Extension Master Gardener

I featured the “Bubblegum” petunia in container #21 and here is another combination using one of my favorite petunias. The deep purple color of the alternanthera brings out the dark centers of the petunia bloom. The juncus plant makes a super thriller background plant.

RECIPE:
• (1) Juncus “Blue Mohawk”
• (2) Supertunia “Vista Bubblegum”
• (1) Alternanthera “Little Ruby”

TIPS:
• Supertunias are truly “super producers.” This cascading plant is covered with blossoms all season.
• Trim the petunia plants occasionally to keep them fresh and full looking.
• Fertilize frequently.

May 22, 2020 By Cindy Jungman, SDSU Extension Master Gardener

The tall center plant is appropriately nicknamed “Propeller Plant” with its flat propeller-shaped leaves!

RECIPE:
• (1) Senecio crassissimus “Propeller Plant” or “Lavender Steps”
• (1) Jade Plant
• (1) Jade Plant “Hobbit”
• (1) Cotyledon “Happy Young Lady”
• (1) Echeveria “Plush Plant”
• (1) Adromichus cristatus

TIPS:
• Notice I topped the soil with pea gravel to give the container a finished look.
• Minimum care required. Fertilize only occasionally at half the recommended strength.

Container #54: Painter’s Palette

May 22, 2020 By Cindy Jungman, SDSU Extension Master Gardener

A great combination for part shade, the soft pony tail grass drapes beautifully beneath the Painter’s Palette plant. While the Painter’s Palette plant does put out pretty red spike-like bracts, its true beauty is in its variegated leaves.

RECIPE:
• (1) Persicaria “Painter’s Palette”
• (3) Stipa “Pony Tail Grass”

TIPS:
• Persicaria plants require shade to part shade. Leaves will scorch if given full sun.
• The persicaria plant benefits from trimming when first planted to encourage more branching.

May 22, 2020 By Cindy Jungman, SDSU Extension Master Gardener

The sweet flag plant provides such contrast to the dark colors of the perilla plant! The blue container looks striking placed on a mat of perennial lysimachia.

RECIPE:
• (1) Perilla “Magilla”
• (1) Variegated Sweet Flag “Ogon”

TIPS:
• Minimal care required.
• These plants prefer moist soil. Do not allow to dry out.
