Container #34 (Joyful Succulents #9): Specimen Succulents

Some of my larger specimen plants are showcased in matching blue ceramic containers on the steps of our retaining wall.

RECIPE:
• (1) Echeveria “Shaviana”
• (1) Echeveria “Deranosa”
• (1) Echeveria “Topsy Turvy”
• (1) Echeveria “Desert Rose”

TIPS:
• Larger specimen plants require more frequent watering.
• The larger plants produce lots of babies! Offshoots can be carefully removed to grow as new plants.

Container #35: Vertical Appeal

Yes, the container in the back is as tall as it looks! The container is a tall white Grecian urn as shown in the second photo. There are only two plants creating this look – a perilla plant and a sweet potato vine. While the perilla plant is similar in looks to coleus, it tolerates full sun and grows to mammoth proportions. I added two lime green containers to the grouping to coordinate with the lime color of the sweet potato vine.

RECIPE:
• (1) Perilla “Magilla”
• (1) Sweet Potato Vine “Emerald Lace”

TIPS:
• The perilla plant is grown in a small tomato cage to give the plant support and to keep the branches from breaking off in wind. As you can see, the cage is quickly hidden.
• Even with a tomato cage, I recommend placing this container in a protected spot.

Container #36 (Joyful Succulents #10): Succulent Thriller, Fillers, and Spillers

This container was an attention-getter! The “thriller, filler, spiller” concept is demonstrated in this succulent container. Go to https://www.finegardening.com/ar…/thrillers-fillers-spillers for more information.

RECIPE:
• (1) Burro’s Tail (spiller)
• (1) Cotyledon “Happy Young Lady” (thriller)
• (1) Aloe “Gator” (filler)
• (1) Faucaria tigrina “Tiger Jaws” (filler)

TIPS:
• Place this container in a protected spot where it won’t get bumped as the leaves of the burro’s tail plant fall off easily.
• The burro’s tail plant propagates easily from either leaf or stem cuttings. More on this later in the summer!

Container #37: Soft & Subtle

This container provides soft subtle color. The upright habit of the fuschia allows the blossoms to dangle over the other plants.

RECIPE:
• (1) Fuschia “Delta’s Sarah”
• (1) Ivy “Lauren’s Lace”
• (1) Impatiens “Impreza Orange”

TIPS:
• The fuschia flowers best in part shade rather than full shade.
• The ivy makes a wonderful house plant, but be sure to treat the plant with systemic or insecticidal soap prior to taking it inside to prevent an infestation of spider mites.

Container #38 (Joyful Succulents #11): Colorful Kiwi

Aeonium “Kiwi” is such a colorful plant when given full sun! It’s green, yellow and pink colors are a show in themselves, but the plant is even more showy when underplanted with the yellowish fine-leaf sedum.

RECIPE:
• (3) Aeonium “Kiwi”
• (1) Sedum “Fine Leaf Gold”, divided

TIPS:
• The Aeonium plant puts out plentiful rosettes, so the container will become fuller as the summer progresses.
• Aeonium is easy to propagate from stem cuttings. More on this later in the summer!
